Christmas means different things to different people world over, some argue it was a day Jesus Christ was born, some said Jesus was not born on 25th so why the noise of Christmas on this day. Others see Christmas day as a day to celebrate love in any way. Either you celebrate with your family, you celebrate with your new catch boy friend or girl friend or you show love to the needy, the less privileged and downtrodden. Some actually go as far as pledging their love to a lover, for example, it is a day some ladies will wilfully give away their virginity to a lover to convince him of her love since it is the season of love. Again some men will part with fat bank account to convince a lady of their love for her. Some give out gift of cars, houses, expensive cloths and jewelries, anything is worth sacrificing to people as far as Christmas is concern.
For an individual since it is a season of celebration some started the preparations from the beginning of a year by saving money for Christmas. A father can go as far as sacrificing anything to make sure the households have a taste of Christmas fun fare.
What is really Christmas? What are we actually celebrating? Is the celebrant of Christmas who is JESUS happy with the attitudes, impressions, and the way His birthday is been celebrated? All these questions need an urgent answers.
Was Jesus actually born on 25th December?
This has been a serious bone of contention among believers and the general public. The truth is that, it is not about the date Jesus was born, it is all about the day the Lord FULFILLED HIS PROMISE OF REDEMPTION TO MANKIND. So it is not all about the date we celebrate but the significant of the celebration, whether it is in January or June or December, the fact remains that Jesus was born so this brought joy and good news to mankind.
In this article, I will explain the meaning of Christmas in FIVE phases of the fulfillment of the promises of God. Four of these phases are already established and the world is waiting for the fulfillment of the last phase.
The Promise of the Messiah
**. God promised redemption to man after the serpent deceived Adam and Eve
15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
** God promised the world that a virgin shall be with a child
14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Confirmation of the promise
God confirmed the aged long awaited promise of Messiah with Mary
26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,
27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary.
28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.
29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.
30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.
31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.
32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:
33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?
35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.
19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.
20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.
21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.
22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,
23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
THE THIRD PHASE
The birth of Messiah
This is exactly what brought JOY to the whole world. It was not the promise nor the confirmation but the BIRTH OF CHRIST. This is exactly what we celebrate. In a real sense, this is not what brought redemption to man as God promised, but the Fourth Phase.
7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.
9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.
15 And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.
16 And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
18 And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.
19 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.
20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.
21 And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
THE FOURTH PHASE
The fulfillment of the promise.
The promise of redemption from sin was fulfilled when Jesus began His work on earth within three years and finished it on the cross through His death. Though we have special time we celebrate this which we called Easter, but there can never be easter if there is no BIRTH
28 After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
29 Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
30 When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
4 But when the fullness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,
5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.
6 And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.
7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.
8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.
Christ came for our SINS, this is the redemption the world celebrate. If then we celebrate Jesus who is the reason for Christmas but we live in SIN we are not making Him happy. If because of Christmas once happy and peaceful home will have crisis because of lack of Christmas clothes, shoes, chicken or gift, the we make the celebrant JESUS unhappy for marking His birthday in gross misconduct and ignorance of the reason for the season. We do not celebrate Christmas because JESUS was born on that day we celebrate Christmas because a time was fulfilled when God sent JESUS to come and redeem us from sins.
THE FIFTH PHASE
The fifth phase of our JOY is the second coming of Christ so we celebrate Christmas in view of the coming of our Saviour the Lord Jesus Christ. The is the grand master of all celebrations but it is pathetic that majority does not prepare for this. They are already carried away with the Third Phase which is Just the Birth, the beginning of the journey of redemption. It is also surprising that some lost the very life Jesus was born to safe by committing sins during Christmas.
1 Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.
2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.
4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.
5 And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.
6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.
7 Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.
9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
I wish all the reader of this piece heaven at last in Jesus name. Amen
